Nyala
Sports Club based in Minneapolis, Minnesota was founded in 1988 with the purpose
of promoting sports within the local Ethiopian Community. Since its inception,
Nyala S.C. has provided members of the Ethiopian community with an interest in
participating in sporting activities, an opportunity to do so especially in the
sport of soccer.
That
same year, Nyala participated in its first Ethiopian Sports Federation in North
America (ESFNA) tournament. For the next 14 years, Nyala has taken part in all
of the annual events and has consistently strived to win the prestigious event.
So far the Cup and glory that comes with being champions has eluded Nyala but
overall, the team has managed to consistently be competitive as shown in the
results it has attained over the last few years. Throughout its participation,
Nyala has managed to win the respect and admiration of its opponents and fans
with its best performances being in the 1999 tournament in Dallas where it
placed 2nd and in Toronto the following year, where it placed 3rd.
Nyala
currently has some of the top players that take part in the ESFNA tournament.
Most notable of these is Tenkir Reta a former Ethiopian national team player who
was selected for the team that toured Ethiopia in 2000. Another outstanding
player and team captain is Getachew Abebe who along with Bati Tola were selected
to the team that toured Ethiopia in 2000. As important to the team as its
players, is the contributions of its board members and coaching staff. Zacharius
Getachew, the club president has dedicated countless time and effort to ensure
that Nyala remains competitive. And along with Coach Rico Gilardi and Asst.
Coach Zeudu Abebe, they have been active members throughout the club’s 14 year
history. Other current Committee members are Vice President Tamirat Mindaye,
Treasurer Yosef Haile, Secretary Andu Debebe and Public Relations Girma Kebede.
Nyala
looks forward to the 2002 tournament in Washington D.C as an opportunity to
capture the championship that has eluded it and where better to win it than
where it participated in the tournament for the first time 14 years ago!
